Police say they have information that there could be instability centering the fair

Barishal police deny permission for 42-year-old Baishakhi Mela citing security threat

The Barishal Metropolitan Police (BMP) has denied permission for the traditional Baishakhi Mela organised by Udichi Shilpi Goshthi, citing security risks. The fair, held at the Brajamohan School premises for over four decades, was scheduled as a limited one-day event this year due to ongoing SSC examinations.

"We have information suggesting possible instability centering the event. Given the current fragile security situation in the country, managing a large gathering like the Baishakhi Mela would pose challenges," said Barishal Metropolitan Police Commissioner Shafiqul Islam. He added that since the district administration is already holding a Baishakhi Mela at Bell’s Park, ensuring adequate security for another fair simultaneously would be difficult.

Earlier, on 8 April, a stage play based on the Ramayana was cancelled at the Manasa Temple in Barishal city after local police refused permission, citing the SSC exams and objections from residents.

According to Advocate Bishwanath Das Munshi, president of Udichi Shilpi Goshthi’s Barishal chapter, a written request was submitted for the Mela, but police refused permission without providing any formal explanation.

Professor Badiur Rahman, president of Udichi‍‍`s central committee, expressed disappointment over the decision. "The Bangla New Year is being celebrated nationwide through various events. There’s no logical reason to prevent a fair here," he said. He also affirmed that Udichi intends to proceed with the fair as planned. "If anyone wants to forcibly stop it, let them try," he added.

Meanwhile, the district administration has organised a week-long Baishakhi Mela at Bell’s Park, which will feature various cultural programs and events.
